Spent a day in Acworth. Historic downtown is real nice.

Henry's restaurant... if you're in Acworth check this place out and try the Ooh la la. It is fantastic.

So I saw this sign and I walked all the way down the street to get some candy. Well, guess what not a candy store. This place turned out to be a vintage clothing store, just little disappointed.

There was this however. Don't know what it was.

This was a fun street. Lots of people. And some respite from the sun.

No respite from this harpy however. You just have to walk quickly past... and don't look into her eyes.

The plane I took to Eugene. I think our pilot forgot where we were supposed to land so he just made his own course to the runway.

Got lucky with a clear day leaving SEA/TAC. Lake Washington and Mercer Island with Lake Sammamish behind.

The Great Salt Lake. I don't think salt is supposed to make water red.

I somehow don't think Twin Falls, ID contributes much to the viewer audience of the BET awards. I could be wrong however.

The airport might be a little too late to warn people to stay home and not travel if they are sick.

The title really takes care of any explanation that might be required. Except for this first one I guess. It's the airport.

Old guy with the candy cane in the middle gave me a good whack with said candy cane for not wearing my jacket. Told me us crazy kids are all hot blooded.

This is where the title becomes applicable.

Ryan isn't a cougar. But he had coffee with us anyways.

After Boise and coffee with the cougars, driving down I-15 in Utah. Under "Jesus Christ is Lord" it says "Not a Swear Word".

Moroni, UT. The weather changes nice and slow there but when it gets going it's fun to watch. Those are rain clouds.

Same view when the weather rolls through. The mountains on both sides of Moroni keep the weather from rolling through the valley. Really fun to watch.

I've got to think there is somewhere better than tile floor in the Salt Lake City airport.

Guess where I've been. I'm not even going to say where this time.

Brought my tripod all the way to Austin with me this time. Missed that awesome Texas sunset the first try. I found this intersection though.

And these lonely rocks near the intersection.

Second try and I just missed it again. But the moments after sunset were almost as good. Maybe even better.

Hill Country.

Yes back to Texas. But first back to SEA/TAC.

Pretty exciting to rent the compact and find this sitting in your spot. I thought we should have played dumb but we found our Chevy Cobalt eventually.

Had to drive out to Burnet, Texas to take care of some business. Pretty long drive out to there and on the way saw a flat part of Texas, a buffalo farm, an emu farm, a working rental car (that would be ours, and no not the mustang I was hoping for), a hot cup of Folgers (felt the hot coffee more than anything else, but I did catch a glimpse of it flying off the dashboard and straight into my crotch) and got to sit on a copy of USA Today so I wouldn't stain the rental car upholstery, saw my first billboard for a Cowboy Church, a regular sized traffic light next to the railroad tracks, the hard driving rain of Texas (won't miss that one), yellow diamond shaped road signs warning of a nearby church, lots of cactus... cacti?, a Longhorn win in the Fiesta Bowl (really didn't see it but the pilot was getting updates from air traffic control and passing them along during out descent into Austin), and finally a fiery red-orange Texas hill country sunset.

Getting Out of Seattle for Christmas.

This is a long one. Too much went on in the end of December to spend anytime uploading photos.

So here it is, finally, Christmas events galore, some festive drinking, my birthday (number 23) along with some less festive drinking, Sun Valley to bring in the New Year with friends and of course a lot of drinking and childish behavior, and finally Mark's birthday (don't worry there was plenty of drinking).

O'Hare in the Winter. No Let's Try Minneapolis Instead.

Minneapolis... in the winter... yea, no I think it's a great idea someone decided a major international airport should be built in a state that only has winter. Fantastic idea.

Got stuck in Cleveland Hopkins airport for 10 hours. So I watched the Continental line for about 5 of those hours.

That pole that holds up the barriers for the line was a trap for 99% of the people walking through that line. Just too complicated for some of us apparently. The rest of the world needs to give us a break about being able to locate their countries on a map... we can't even avoid inanimate objects with our roller luggage.

Walking (slowly) through security in Cleveland Hopkins. Don't know if these were all confiscated items or someone just went overboard with providing examples of what you can't have on the plane. I can understand someone not thinking a hunting knife or a small tool, leatherman, etc. is a big deal but are there really people out there who bring their grenades, ammo belts, ninja throwing stars, bull whips and banana clips in their carry on bags? And I don't want to meet the kind of person who sneaks one of those pie servers on the plane (there is one up there).

I "heart" commercialism. Had to type it because as far as I know the computer won't write it for me.

Good news for those on the fence about an open casket funeral. The Container Store now sells large size plastic caskets. That store really does have everything.

Chased the penguin for a short while.

Some reindeer penguin dance action on the streets of Bellevue. Not sure who won.

This guy must be able to give Chuck Norris a run for his money if he can leave the house wearing that sweater... anytime of the year.

I wonder if these i-pod vending machines ever do that thing regular food vending machines do. That thing where whatever you've chosen gets stuck at the last moment and hangs on the the cork screw in the machine taunting and confusing you.

What do you do then... buy a second i-pod and enjoy them both? I wonder if you can pay in change like regular vending machines? Think I will stick to real stores.

Bourbon Country

It's like going wine tasting in maybe Oregon or California. Except a lot fewer people care about seeing the place than getting the free tasting, and they make lame jokes the whole tour and flirt with the poor tour guide girl.

Thought this sign was a good way to start off the pictures. Bar in Bardstown Kentucky.

At the Heaven Hills Distillery. That one in the box I think is about $1000. And those bottles with blue wax are older than me.

Outside at the Heaven Hills Distillery. Those are the rack houses in the background covered with black mold.

Next stop was the Maker's Mark Distillery. Looked more like Santa's workshop if Santa had started moonshining.

Think this one was a fresh vat of yeast and corn mash.

I wasn't so serious when I asked out loud if I could put my arm in the vat. The tour guide was serious though. This vat was almost done and warm ... kind of taste like grape nuts, little chunky, kind of sour.

If you find some arm hairs in your bourbon about 8 years from now I apologize, but I'm not sorry.

Very dark and cold in the rack house.

Walked through a rotten wood door from the rack house into this fake looking, commercialized tasting room, which sold every souvenir you could imagine.

Dipping their own bottles in 400 F molten wax (~205 C). This guy had a little trouble ... three times.

Got all excited driving by this abandoned church with adjacent graveyard on our way back to Bardstown. Had to take some pictures. There were two kids playing basketball in their backyard just out of frame on the left. I don't think I'd be okay with playing near a graveyard everyday.

Really, I could shoot for the next Urban Outfitter catalog.

Home of the Hoosiers ... Apparently

Turkey day. The best holiday. Why?

Got to go to Indiana. Bloomington, Indiana to be more specific. Home of the Hoosiers (basketball). Starbucks at SEA/TAC was closed at 5 AM. Something I was not thankful for on this Thanksgiving day.

And the news was just so cheery that morning too.

I was worried about having to transfer through O'Hare on Thanksgiving day. Instead I was bored. Very bored.

Got bored waiting for Sean to pick me up from the brand new Indy airport.

But the food made up for all of that. The bourbon helped too.

If you are in a city with a Specialtys then try the cookies. My arms were tired from carrying two dozen of these guys through airports all day. Worth it.

Sitting in SEA/TAC again. This is Logan. He saw the camera and gave me this smile and waited while I took his photo.

Logan likes airplanes. His favorite one is airplane kind. He told me so more than once.

Finally on the plane. Oh look rain. Who knew.

First time in Austin.

These dudes are everywhere in downtown Austin. Fun to watch them race each other up hills.

Longhorns played Baylor while I was there. Longhorn fans are hardcore, but very nice too.

Outside the UT stadium. Really wish I had gone to school here.

Lyndon Baines Johnson library on UT campus. I highly recommend you check it out if you are there and have a few free hours.

Inside the LBJ museum. Real creepy statues. Check out those bow ties though. Someone should bring back the bow tie with a regular suit. Not me though.

Just me or does this whole setup come off as just a little homoerotic? I just think they might have arranged everything a little different.

Hello Chicago.

I counted six Starbucks on my long walk through O'Hare terminal. I don't know if Boise even has that many. Period.

Never been to Chicago before. Got a job and they sent me straight there for a week. This was the view from the hotel room.

And this was right in front of the hotel. Michigan Avenue bridge.

And looking the other way towards Lake Michigan.

Gotta be an interesting place to work. I'd wear floaties to work.

My favorite from Chicago. No subtlety on the street with the 5D. Got that guy's attention.

Has to be tough to paint though with all the mortar in between the bricks.

Lake Shore Drive. Lots of cars.

Really fancy 7-Elevens in there. Maybe they sell wine in the bottle instead of the box in there. Who knows.

Supporting Democracy

So there was an Obama support event in Boise a couple weeks ago. Hosted by the Melting Pot. It's a fondue restaurant.

Cheese and wine are a very good mix.

Wilkins and Ben totally dressed the same. They had to make a conscious effort to avoid standing right next to each other all night.

Good wine.

The cheese was also very good.

I never found out what America's Promise actually was.

I really wanted that t-shirt.

Look at them supporting democracy with their discussion. I am sure powerful statements were made.

Lionel Hampton Jazz Fest

The 2008 Jazz Fest was a great opportunity to shoot, and I had a lot of fun shooting for two nights in a row, in front of hot spotlights until way into the early morning. These are all from way back in February. If you YouTube the Jazz Fest I think you can spot me scurrying about in front of the stage.

You just can't find snappy dressers like Jon Hendricks anymore. Really how many people you know could pull off this red jacket? And his whole performance is full of energy. If you ever get the chance to hear him don't pass it up.

My favorite shot from the whole entire Jazz Fest. Sara Gazarek.

One of my other favorite shots. Don't know his name though. The lighting was just awesome for every performer.

And this is the big shiny National Medal of the Arts President Bush presented to the University of Idaho this year in recognition of the Jazz Fest. Apparently UI is the first public university to get one of these bad boys.

The Jazz Fest has gone on since 1967. The 2008 Jazz Fest was a celebration of what would have been Lionel Hampton's 100th birthday.

I think Dee Daniels was my favorite singer of the whole Jazz Fest. It was hard to remember to shoot instead of just stand and listen when she came on.

Dee sang with Sara Gazarek the night before. It was amazing.

That's John Clayton in the background. He is the Jazz Fest artistic director. Mr. Clayton won an Grammy this year I believe ... forget what for though.

Here is Jon again. He performed Friday and Saturday night.

Really how many musicians out there would do this?

Jon's daughter Aria Hendricks ... I'm pretty sure. She has the same on stage energy her father does.

This is when Jon and she were singing together.

Some hand held action in the dark without a flash. This was going on at the same time as the concerts on either sides of the main stage. The line to get on the dance floor was easily a hundred people long.

Tour de Fat

Tour de Fat came to Boise this Saturday. Before the festivities though I spied this guy. Seemed like a lot of gear for taking pictures of an ear of corn.

"I can drink good beer and I've got the ID to prove it". That's what the wristbands said on them. My first "Beer Token of Appreciation".

There were a lot of bicycle related activities including the "slowest bicyclist" race and no track track standing was not allowed, you had to keep moving forward the whole time. The travelocity gnome was apparently there too. He was very good at riding slowly.

The winner. There was a choir and everything. The "pulpit", if one could call it that or see it in this picture, was made from a keg.

Saw Mr. Willy Wonka there too.

And a whole mess of crazy bikes. Pretty sure this one did not have any brakes. Then again what's going to get in your way on that bad boy?

This wasn't the real car, but some guy gave New Belgium the deed to his car in exchange for a brand new hand made bicycle. He promised not to drive for a year and his car will be sold or auctioned and the money donated to charity.

All female dance troop from Portland. Forget their name but they had some sweet bicycle tricks to show off.

MarchFourth Marching Band is also from Portland. Great sound. And you can't go wrong with guys on stilts.

These guys were good. Hand stands and what not ... all on stilts for over and hour straight.

Starbucks Homebase

Haven't been here in awhile, in fact nearly 18 years.

Mt. Rainer from the plane window. Found out that Alaska/Horizon provides one free cup of beer or wine with your ticket.

One of the first things I noticed in Seattle. Wish I could have experienced the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony.

First step off the bus in Seattle after leaving the airport. Tried a shot from the hip of those two people in the foreground. Got a good one of the building instead. Apparently I need to practice.

If you're in Seattle and want a good free view don't pay to go to the 76th floor of the Columbia building. Check out the view from the 40th floor Starbucks in the Columbia building instead.

Coolest library I've ever seen. Couldn't stop watching the passing cars in the overhanging glass. Very cool.

Not sure which building this is, but the Columbia building is hanging out behind above me.

I believe this is the Rainer building.

Can't be a tourist in Seattle without going to Pike Place Market right?

I got all excited when we walked into this "bookstore". Turned out to be a donut shop instead. All those books ... just decorative. You can't read any of them. The monorail is right outside the windows though. And the donuts were pretty good.

There's the monorail. And an unusual looking hotel.

Apparently tourists have to make a picture here. It's an unspoken rule I was told. So I obliged.

The self portrait is hard with something larger than a point and shoot. Kinda awkward too.

The view of Seattle from Kerry Park. If you are visiting Seattle you need to make the hike up to this place for the view while you're there. Definitely worth it ... even on a 92 degree day.

Also go to Purple while you're there. They have a lot of wine. And everything from the architecture of the building to the napkin rings is tied together. They even offer an extensive cheese list to go along with your wine.

Took the ferry to Bremerton, past Seabeck and ended up in this gorgeous place. How would you like this view to be your back yard?

Mariners versus Blue Jays. We had the hard core fans in our section. Three of them tossed out by alcohol enforcement before the 7th. Lady with the goofy hat kept dropping trow for any reason she could think of, seven reasons in fact.

This guy and his lady friend were sitting in our seats. She ended up moving up a row and sitting with some other guys for awhile. Kinda strange.

Mariners won. Three run homer bottom of the 9th for the win.

NFG in Moscow

New Found Glory for those of you out of the loop. They played in the Kibbie Dome on the University of Idaho campus for dead week.

This guy was more popular than the band. The crowd went nuts every time he crossed the stage ... don't think they realized he was not in the band.

It was nice being allowed the stand between security and the stage ... almost too close though.

Was a good concert, but the band cut out pretty early when they were done. It was free though so can't complain.

The lighting setup had its moments too, like this one.

Was a little tough shooting in front of the barriers the way they were setup. Almost got kicked by him every time he would run to the front of the stage.

Almost seems like he is looking at me ... not sure.

Managed to squeeze my way up to the front of the barrier for the rest of the concert and shoot from there. Almost worked out a better minus all of the people jumping around ... but no one was kicking me in the face. Tradeoffs.

Did turn around at one point in time to have a crowd surfer pin me between them and the barrier. Not fun.

This guy surfed all the way to the front and security pulled him over the barrier. Then they lost track of him, he made a loop all the way around the stage unseen and walked up on stage, unseen, while the band was in mid song.

He said a few words to the lead singer and then looked like he was going to jump back into the crowd, but he was just messing around. I don't think he was even drunk, despite his appearance, just having a little fun. He climbed down and went back into the crowd.

The security guys faces were priceless when they thought he was going to jump though.

I always enjoy the results of catching other peoples' flashes.

He loved looking at the camera. He did this the whole concert.

A little sand never hurt anyone

Track meets are the best thing to watch and shoot ... except those moments when a discus gets thrown at the crowd and skips across the track behind your back. Those moments ... less fun.

The long jump is one of the better looking events as far as pictures go. The sand always comes out cool.

And some people make the funny faces when they jump. Wish I had a camera that shot 10fps sometimes for this event.

I know it's complete overkill but scrolling threw all those shots quickly is like flip book minus the crappy stick figures doing backflips off walls. If you've ever drawn a flip book on a stack of yellow sticky notes you know what I'm talking about.

Not everyone has fun watching track meets.

Fire, Sex Addicts and Loggers

Sounds pretty fun doesn't it?

Started the week off flying to Portland, for a funeral. Also happened to be doing a story on tattoo culture. Meet one of my uncles, Marty, these are his birds.

Saw this little site out in front of their house, 20 feet from the front porch. Apparently a drunk, underage, teenage girl was driving up the street and hit a young man, who was riding his bike home from work. He bleed out in the street gutter. Very sad.

Had a fun wait at PDX later that day. Saw this guy waiting for his plane. I think he was headed to an Abercrombie commercial.

Moving sidewalks are pretty fun. This kid did this for an hour straight and never stopped smiling.

And then this is what greets me back in Spokane.

In case you've ever wondered, this is what a pulse detonation engine looks like, on the left, when it's working correctly. On the right is your first sign something is wrong.

And this is what I get to work on as of late. Not nearly as exciting ... no flames or explosions, in fact no loud noises at all ... just moderate exposure to ozone, sewage water and pathogenic diseases. That's why I let Brian there work on it while I delegate from a distance.

Apparently this guy had a sexual addiction ... I didn't buy his story. And then the whole thing turned into an "accepting god into your life" speech. A lot of people left after that.

Not everyone left though.

Logger sports ... only in North Idaho. I imagine this must go on elsewhere actually. Seriously fun to watch though. Who knew they wore track spikes to this kind of stuff?

We don't fuck around up here. Watch out or you will get an axe thrown at you.

We also toss the caber. Ours is called the "Big Pickle".

This one speaks for itself.

Last thing I saw on my way out ... yes we do love our BBQ up north. And yes that is a farm tool being used in place of a spatula.

It was 30 degrees the whole time too. Or about -1 C for those of you who love the metric.

Never had the chance to shoot a protest/rally before. Was interesting. Didn't really agree with or against some or all of them, but they have some good points.

Really liked this sign.
